Auckland Museum and Domain
One of the most popular (and most importantly, cheap) attractions in Auckland, that is a stone throw away from Epsom, is the Auckland Museum and domain. A worthwhile day trip, we recommend starting at the domain where you can explore some of the many historic trails that wind throughout the huge area of greenery, including the lovers walk – or follow the trail through the bush to Parnell and take in some of the artesian food and chocolatiers.
If you prefer to stick in the domain, the biggest highlight is the winter gardens which features rare and spectacular plants in a constantly-changing display within the confides of the two barrel-vaulted Victorian style glass houses which face out on to an extensive courtyard and sunken pool.
From there you can move onto the Auckland Museum which is open daily from ten AM to five PM and if you are looking to learn a little bit more about New Zealand’s history and culture, look no further. The museum features a diverse range of exhibits, including Maori and Pacifica, fashion and pop-culture, wars and even a volcano room.
Mount Eden
Any local will tell you that you can’t visit Epsom without walking to the summit of Mt. Eden. On a velar day, a trip up the highest volcanic peak in mainland Auckland will reward you with striking panoramic views views of the downtown area and harbour and greater city limits. The walk up is also adjourned with animals and stones that are often arranged to spell different messages. Be sure to take plenty of water, snacks and selfies!
Stardome Observatory
Perfect for children and adult stargazers, the stardome offers visitors a truly unique experience to fully experience a slice of the southern hemisphere night sky. Discover the history and significance to New Zealanders of well-known constellations like the Southern Cross and Matariki. The sky of the Southern Hemisphere contains beautiful star clusters, gas cloud nebulae and star patterns that can only be seen from this latitude. Open seven days a week, this is a perfect activity for the whole family to enjoy.
La Cigale French Market
Voted Auckland’s Best Food Market by Metro Magazine for the last 8 years, this artesian French market you’ll find an amazing selection of top quality products from both New and from overseas. If you are wanting the perfect way to start your morning, look no further, the markets feature long communal tables where you can enjoy a coffee with something delicious from one of the counters, which include the famous Croque Monsieurs or the best Bahn Mi sandwich in Auckland, mouth-watering beef bourguignon pie or a slice of one of our many tarts – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Experience it for yourself, La Cigale French Market is held every Saturday from 8am to 1.30pm and Sunday from 9am to 1.30pm.
Eden Garden
This award winning garden is located in the heart of Auckland and features over five acres of award-winning gardens and serenity that’s well worth the trip. Along side the many plant collections (including perennials, vireyas, camellias, bromeliads and native New Zealand plants), there’s also waterfalls, rock formations, resident native birds and fabulous city and harbour views.
